Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a coastal city located in South East Queensland, 94km south of the Queensland capital, Brisbane.  With a population of around 540,000 in 2010 it is the second most populous city in Queensland and has the highest population of any non-capital city in Australia.

Covering an area of 1400 square kilometres, the city’s boundaries extend from Coolangatta to just south of Beenleigh, incorporating South Stradbroke Island and part of Moreton Bay and extending west to the hinterland of Mount Tamborine and the Lamington and Darlington Ranges.

The city consists of 57 kilometres of coastline which includes some of the most popular surfing beaches in the world.  Volunteers on the Coast man Australia’s largest surf lifesaving service and local authorities have established wonderful walkways, bicycle tracks and user amenities along the coastline.

Waterfront canal living is a feature of the Gold Coast and most canals are an extension of the Nerang River.  The Gold Coast Seaway, between The Spit and South Stradbroke Island provides direct access to the Pacific Ocean from the Broadwater and many of the residential estates.

In the last fifty years the Gold Coast has grown from a small beachside holiday destination to Australia’s sixth largest city and is now considered to be one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.

In 1925 tourism in the area grew rapidly when Jim Cavill established the Surfers Paradise Hotel and the population grew steadily to support the tourism industry.  By 1940 real estate speculators began referring to the area as the Gold Coast and by the 1970s high-rise buildings began to dominate the coastline and the Management Rights industry was born.

Tourism is now the region’s largest industry with around ten million tourists visiting every year contributing more than $4.4 billion into the city’s economy.  There are approximately 65,000 bed spaces and the industry accounts for one in four jobs in the city.  The industry generates total revenue of around $2.5 billion per annum.  Over the years developers have purpose-built many holiday and permanent complexes which include provision for Management Rights businesses.
